That May 6 makeup day is why 2026 feels especially long. Many workers also take 30 Apr – 2 May off to connect 29 Apr through 6 May. Expect peak domestic travel across that whole window.

Why the length changes year to year

The four holidays are fixed to the same calendar dates, but the break is not. Two things move it:

• Which weekdays the dates land on. April 29 and May 3–5 falling next to a weekend stitches the block together; falling mid-week splits it into two short runs with working days between.
• Substitute holidays. Under Article 3-2 of the Holiday Act, when a national holiday falls on a Sunday the following weekday becomes a 休日. That is why 2026 stretched to May 6 and why some years do not.

The practical consequence is that the gap between April 29 and May 3 is where people spend paid leave to connect the two halves. The narrower that gap, the heavier the travel surge — which is the whole story of Golden Week 2027, where a single day of leave buys a seven-day run.

1. Book early or don’t move cities. Unreserved cars become luggage Tetris; reserved seats vanish first.
2. Stay put in Tokyo/Osaka and do neighborhood walks — Golden Week is bad for “Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima in five days.”
3. Theme parks & teamLab sell out — treat USJ / teamLab like concert tickets.
4. Shrines & parks are free and packed (Children’s Day carp streamers). Go at open.
5. Hotels: peak ADR — if you’re flexible, fly the week before/after.
6. Cash + konbini still save you when a favorite kissaten closes for the break.
7. Luggage: don’t drag suitcases through holiday stations — lockers / takkyubin.

Is Golden Week “bad” for tourists?
