Japan in December 2026: Winter Lights, Year-End Shutdown, and Prices

December in Japan is the month people book wrong. They picture a festive Christmas trip, but Christmas isn't a holiday here, and the country's real celebration — New Year — is a shutdown that closes half the places you'd planned to visit. The first three weeks and the last ten days are effectively different destinations.

Weather: cold, dry, and clear

Tokyo runs roughly 3–13°C through the month, falling steadily. Kyoto is a touch colder and damper; Hokkaido and the mountain resorts are fully wintry. Kanto's Pacific side is famously dry and sunny in winter, so a cold day in Tokyo is usually a bright one — good for walking and for seeing Mount Fuji, which is at its clearest from late autumn through winter.

Pack layers you can shed indoors. Japanese trains, department stores, and restaurants are heated aggressively, and a heavy coat that's perfect on the street becomes a burden in a crowded carriage.

December 1–20: the value window

This is the better half. November's foliage crowds are gone, the New Year rush hasn't started, and prices sit at ordinary shoulder-season levels for Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

Winter illuminations are the main event. Tokyo's big three — Midtown, Marunouchi, and Roppongi Hills — are free and lit from mid-November, and they're at their calmest on a weeknight. If you're willing to travel for lights, Nabana no Sato in Mie Prefecture runs the longest illumination season in the country — opening in mid-October and continuing into May 2027 — so December is well inside its window and you aren't racing a closing date.

Chichibu Night Festival — December 2–3, 2026. One of Japan's three great float festivals, more than 300 years old, held about 90 minutes from Tokyo. The night of the 3rd is the main event: huge lit floats hauled through the streets, finishing with winter fireworks. It's cold, crowded on the way back to the station, and genuinely worth it. Plan the return train before you go, not after.

December 21 – January 3: prices, then the shutdown

Around the winter solstice, roughly December 22, you'll see yuzu-yu — baths floated with whole yuzu citrus — at sento and onsen across the country, a tradition meant to ward off winter colds. It's a good, cheap, low-effort cultural moment if you happen to be in Japan that week.

Christmas is not a public holiday. December 25, 2026 is a Friday and an ordinary working day. Christmas Eve is a couples' night out, restaurants book up for it, and the well-known fried-chicken tradition is real — but nothing closes and no one has the day off.

The year-end shutdown is the real thing. Roughly December 29 to January 3, a large part of the country stops. Banks and offices close, many restaurants and small shops shut for days, and museums and attractions often follow. Convenience stores, major hotels, and big-city entertainment districts keep running, but you'll notice the gaps. Skiing starts, unevenly

Many Nagano and Hokkaido resorts open between late November and mid-December, but early-season snow depth varies a lot. Early December can be thin, with the deepest, most reliable powder arriving around late December and January. What to actually do in December

• Early December: Kyoto's last leaves, Chichibu, illuminations at their calmest, and shoulder-season prices across the country.
• Mid-December: onsen weather at its best, uncrowded museums, and the last cheap window before the holiday rush.
• Late December: decide whether you want the shutdown atmosphere — quiet, cold, and genuinely different — or whether you'd rather be somewhere else and come back in January.
