Kyoto Itinerary: 3 Days Done Right (East, Arashiyama, North)

Three days in Kyoto is enough for the classic loop — East temples and Gion, one big west or south morning, then Golden Pavilion (or Philosopher’s Path) plus Nishiki and downtown — without pretending you will “see all of Kyoto.” Base near Kyoto Station or Kawaramachi, buy an IC card, and move on foot when the map is dense.

Where to Stay

Day 1: East Kyoto — Kiyomizu, Sannenzaka, Gion

Morning — Kiyomizu-dera. Go early (before 9:00 if you can). The veranda and hillside views set the tone; admission is typically around ¥400–¥500.

Late morning — Sannenzaka / Ninenzaka. Walk the stone lanes toward Gion. Shops and soft cream are fine; keep moving so you are not stuck in tour-group gridlock at noon.

Afternoon — Kodaiji / Yasaka area (optional). If energy remains, add one quieter temple before resting at the hotel. Otherwise reclaim legs for evening.

Evening — Gion. Walk the lanes, photograph architecture, eat nearby. Do not block geiko/maiko for photos — step aside, no chasing, no touching. Etiquette matters more here than at any temple queue.

Day 2: Arashiyama or Fushimi Inari + South

Option A — Arashiyama (west). Bamboo grove early, then Tenryu-ji gardens. Add the monkey park only if you want the climb and views; otherwise save knees for temple paths. Allow a full half-to-full day including train/bus from downtown.

Option B — Fushimi Inari early + south. Torii gates at dawn beat midday heat and crowds. Pair with a quieter south Kyoto stop or return downtown for lunch. Better if you already did bamboo elsewhere or hate west-side transit time.

Do not try both Arashiyama and Fushimi deeply in one day unless you accept a highlight-reel pace.

Day 3: North Temples + Nishiki / Downtown

Morning — Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion). Go at opening. Grounds are a loop; photos from the pond viewpoint are the classic shot. Admission commonly around ¥500.

Late morning — Choose one:

• Ryoan-ji — Rock garden, calmer after Kinkaku crowds
• Philosopher’s Path → Ginkaku-ji — Longer walk, better if weather is mild and you want east-north atmosphere

Buses between north temples are often packed — a taxi hop between Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji can be worth ¥1,500–¥2,500 for two people versus 40 minutes of standing.

Afternoon — Nishiki Market + downtown. Graze, not gorge (many stalls are sample-sized). Then department stores, cafés, or last souvenir run around Kawaramachi / Shijo.

Getting Around (Buses Are Crowded)

Load Suica / ICOCA-style IC before you need it. Google Maps walking times are usually honest; bus ETAs slip in cherry and autumn peaks.

FAQ

Is 3 days enough for Kyoto? Yes for the classic east–west–north highlights. Not enough if you want Uji, Kurama, and every UNESCO site.

Kyoto Station or downtown? Station for rail convenience; Kawaramachi for food and evening walks. Both work for this itinerary.

Should I buy a bus day pass? Only if you will ride many buses the same day. Heavy walkers + subway + one taxi often spend less and waste less time in queues.

Fushimi Inari or Arashiyama on Day 2? Arashiyama for bamboo + garden variety; Fushimi for the iconic gates and an early start. Pick one to do properly.

Can I see geisha in Gion? You may glimpse geiko/maiko on evening streets. Never block, chase, or demand photos — see Japan etiquette rules.

What if it rains? Prioritize covered markets (Nishiki), museum time, and taxi hops. Temple gardens are still beautiful wet — bring a compact umbrella.
