Okinawa Travel Guide: Naha, Beaches, Churaumi, Food (2026)
Okinawa travel guide: base in Naha, fly into Naha Airport, mix city, beaches, and a north-island day. Plan 4–6 days; rental car helps outside Naha.

Okinawa is Japan’s subtropical south — base in Naha, fly into Naha Airport (OKA), and give yourself 4–6 days. The vibe is closer to island Southeast Asia than to Tokyo: slower buses, stronger sun, unique food (taco rice, Okinawa soba, awamori), and beaches that reward leaving the capital. Treat the main island as a north–south line with Naha at the south end.
For mainland city contrast, see Tokyo itinerary and Fukuoka. Etiquette still applies in shrines and baths — Japan etiquette rules.

Getting There and Orientation
Flights — Tokyo → Naha is about 2.5–3 hours. Low-cost and full-service carriers both serve OKA; one-way fares commonly ¥10,000–¥30,000 depending on season.
Airport → Naha — The Yui Rail (monorail) runs from Naha Airport to downtown (Kencho-mae / Miebashi / Makishi for Kokusai-dori). One-way to central stops is often around ¥230–¥290. Taxis to Kokusai-dori hotels commonly ¥1,500–¥2,500.
Getting around
| Area | Best option | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Naha / Kokusai-dori | Walk + monorail | Easy without a car |
| Central coast / American Village | Car or highway bus | Buses work but slow |
| North (Churaumi) | Car or early tour bus | Half-day minimum one way by bus |
| Kerama / outer islands | Ferry + day trip | Book weather-flexible |
Rental car — Often best once you leave Naha. Expressway tolls add up (budget ¥1,000–¥3,000+ for day loops). Parking at beaches and Churaumi fills on holidays. For IDP requirements and ETC card setup, see renting a car in Japan.
Ferries — Day trips to Kerama Islands (zamami / Aka area) for clearer water; round-trip tickets often ¥5,000–¥8,000+ depending on operator and season. Cancel if seas are rough.
What to Do
Shuri Castle area
Rebuilt after wartime destruction and again after the 2019 fire — check current open sections before you go. Combined shrine/castle-park visits fit a morning. Admission for restored areas has typically been in the ¥400–¥1,600 range depending on ticket type; confirm on-site. Pair with nearby lookouts over Naha.
Kokusai-dori
Naha’s main tourist street: souvenirs, ice cream, liveliness at night. Good for first dinner (taco rice ¥800–¥1,400, Okinawa soba ¥700–¥1,200) and a stroll — not the whole trip.
Beaches
Emerald Beach (Motobu, near Churaumi) is convenient if you are already north. Closer options and hotel beaches exist along the central west coast; water quality and crowds vary. For clearer water in a day, consider a Kerama ferry trip when weather cooperates — buses alone will not get you island-hopping.
American Village (Chatan)
Shopping, nightlife, and a coastal boardwalk vibe shaped by the US presence. Fine for an afternoon if you have a car; skip if you only have three full days and care more about beaches or Shuri.
Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium
Worth it, but it is north — roughly 1.5–2 hours from Naha by car without heavy traffic. Adult admission often around ¥2,180. Do not squeeze it into a late afternoon after beach-hopping; make it a dedicated half-to-full day.
Food and Drink
- Taco rice — Ground meat, lettuce, cheese, salsa over rice; casual shops ¥800–¥1,400.
- Okinawa soba — Wheat noodles in pork broth (not mainland buckwheat soba); bowls ¥700–¥1,200.
- Pork — Rafute (braised belly), soki (rib), mimiga (ear) at izakaya.
- Awamori — Distilled spirit unique to Okinawa; try a small pour rather than a full bottle first night.
Konbini and markets cover breakfast; see also the broader Japanese food guide.
Best Seasons
Pleasant winter (December–March) — Mild for Japan, fewer typhoons, good for city + aquarium + food. Swim is cooler but possible for the committed.
Spring / early summer — Strong beach season before peak heat and storm risk.
August–September — Hot, humid, and typhoon peak awareness. Build buffer days; ferry cancellations are real. Do not schedule a one-day Kerama hop as your only “must.”
How Many Days
4 days — Naha, Shuri, one beach day, food focus.
5–6 days — Add Churaumi or Kerama (not both rushed), plus American Village if you drive.
FAQ
Do I need a rental car in Okinawa? Not for a Naha-only trip. Yes if you want beaches further north, American Village on your schedule, or Churaumi without an all-day bus.
How many days for Okinawa? Four to six for the main island. Outer-island overnights need more.
Is summer the best time? Beaches are best, but August–September brings typhoon risk. Winter is underrated for comfort.
Can I day-trip to Kerama from Naha? Yes by ferry when seas allow. Budget a full day and have a Naha backup plan.
What should I eat first? Taco rice and Okinawa soba. Add awamori carefully.
Is Churaumi worth the drive? Yes if you like aquariums and can spare half a day or more from Naha — it is not a quick side stop.
