Japan in October 2026: Weather, Foliage Start, Typhoons, and What to Do
Japan in October 2026: cooling weather, early mountain foliage, typhoon tail risk, JR Pass price hike Oct 1, and the best places to go before Kyoto peaks in late November.

October is when Japan starts feeling like autumn without the full late-November temple crush. Cities cool off. Mountains turn first. Domestic travel settles after Silver Week. If your leave lands in October 2026, you are early for Kyoto’s postcard maples — and right on time for Nikko, the Alps, and the first clear Fuji views from the lakes.
Money deadline before the month starts: nationwide JR Pass Ordinary prices rise on October 1. If mid-September reading and the pass already pencils out for your itinerary, buy by September 30.
Pair this with the autumn Japan hub, the 2026 foliage forecast, September if you are bridging months, and November if city maples and the Nov 1 tax-free change are the point.

Weather: cooler, not cold
Tokyo and Kyoto in October usually sit in the mid-teens to low-20s °C by day, cooler at night. Humidity drops compared with September. Pack a light jacket and layers.
Mountain day trips (Nikko, Hakone, Takao, Kawaguchiko) feel colder — especially after dusk. If you are heading to Hokkaido, bring real autumn or early-winter layers.
Typhoons still happen in early October. Build one flexible day. Do not stack a same-day domestic flight, ferry, and remote hike on a tight schedule during the first half of the month.
Foliage in October (what is actually peaking)
Match the region to the month — do not expect Kyoto’s famous temple maples to be at peak in mid-October.
| Region | Typical October story |
|---|---|
| Hokkaido | Plains and parks often peak late Oct; mountains earlier |
| Tohoku | Strong October color in gorges and highland routes |
| Nikko / Chuzenji | One of the best October day trips from Tokyo |
| Japanese Alps / Kamikochi area | Mid–late October highland color |
| Kawaguchiko / Fuji five lakes | Builds through October into November |
| Tokyo / Kyoto city temples | Mostly still green-to-turning; peak usually late Nov |
For city-first itineraries that must include Kyoto temples at peak, aim closer to late November — see the Kyoto autumn foliage guide.
Money deadlines in the same season
Oct 1, 2026 — JR Pass price hike. If a nationwide or regional pass already pencils out for your route, buy before the increase. Full math: JR Pass worth it 2026.
Nov 1, 2026 — tax-free shopping change. Airport refunds replace the old in-store exemption model for many purchases. If heavy shopping is part of October–November plans, read tax-free shopping before you buy.
What to do in October
Best near Tokyo
Nikko for shrines plus early lake-and-maple color — full DIY plan in the Nikko day trip guide.
Hakone for onsen and clearer Fuji odds than summer — Hakone guide.
Kawaguchiko / Chureito Pagoda for Fuji-and-foliage photos as color builds.
Mt. Takao for an easy half-day of trees without a long transfer.
If you want the day handled
A Fuji–Kawaguchiko day is one of the cleanest October escapes when you do not want to puzzle out buses:
Note: Hakone-style Fuji tours and Kawaguchiko foliage tours are not identical — pick based on whether you want onsen/ropeway (Hakone) or lake/pagoda photo stops (Kawaguchiko). For a November-only foliage bus product, see seasonal Kawaguchiko listings closer to the month.
Events and parks
Tokyo Disney Halloween runs through October 31 — dates and costume rules in our Disney Halloween 2026 guide.
Shibuya Halloween is its own crowded street story — Shibuya Halloween guide.
Food and pace
October is excellent for longer walks, outdoor cafés, and onsen day trips without summer heat. Soup season starts to make sense. It is not yet peak illuminations month — save major Christmas lights for Tokyo Christmas illuminations.
Sample October trip shapes
5–7 days, Tokyo-based: city core + Nikko + Hakone or Kawaguchiko + one flexible weather day.
7–10 days, Golden Route early: Tokyo → Hakone/Kawaguchiko → Kyoto/Osaka, accepting that Kyoto maples may still be turning, not peaking.
Hokkaido-first: fly to Sapporo for late-October color, then south — Hokkaido guide.
